Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of forklifts that meet all of the required outcomes including:

coordinating work activities with others prior to operating the forklift

demonstrates completion of operating a fork lift that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying the surrounding environment and location of others when operating the forklift

using hand-eye coordination in correctly manoeuvring and controlling the forklift around obstacles on site

manoeuvring and positioning forklift

correctly fitting, using and removing forklift attachments and using at least two (2) of the following attachments:

tyre handler

lifting device

slipper forks

securing, lifting, transferring and placing load

carrying out forklift inspection and maintenance including maintaining written equipment records

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when operating a forklift:

identifying forklift equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

following forklift operational procedures

applying forklift maintenance systems and procedures

applying basic geological and survey data related to forklift operations

applying site environmental requirements and constraints related to forklift operations
